English Language Arts 5 Course Information

This course is designed to fulfill the curricular objectives of the Saskatchewan Grade 5 English Language Arts curriculum.  The course is divided into five units of study.

Each unit of study contains short story and poetry readings (audio included for majority), novel (audio included, a complete spelling program, grammar tasks with worksheets and answer keys, videos and activities of their own.  No additional text or book is required as everything is provided for you within the course. ~ everything.  Within each unit, there are a variety of assignments and quizzes.

Unit One: World Wide Kids (10 weeks)

Children need to believe in their own self-worth and to feel that they have control over the things that happen to them. Children need to look inward and focus on self-image and self-esteem. They need to reflect on self and life, and on their beliefs, values, and those of their society. 

Section 1: Reading Comprehension

Section 2: All About Me

Section 3: Kids Around the World

Section 4: Wonder by R.J. Palacio Novel Study (text and audio of novel provided)

Unit Two: Exploring Heritage (8 weeks)

Children need to look outward and examine their relationships with others, their community, and the world. Children also need to consider the social and historical context. They need to explore their connections in families, schools, groups, and communities and to understand the diverse needs and wants of others. Children need to show concern for other people in their relationships, groups, and communities.

Section 3: Early Canadian Settlers

Section 4: Canadian Settlers – Short Stories & Poems

Unit Three: Mystery (8 weeks)

Children need to consider imaginary worlds and possibilities as well as a range of literary genres and authors.

Section 2: Mystery Short Stories

Section 3: Mystery TV Shows

Section 4: Real Detective Work

Section 5: Writing a Mystery

Unit Four: Messages (5 weeks)

Children need to consider the role of communication in their lives and the technologies and strategies that help people become effective communicators. Children need the skills to interact effectively with others.

Section 1: Reading Comprehension

Section 2: Messages Are Everywhere

Section 3: Messages in the Media

Section 4: Short Stories with Messages

Unit Five: This Is Our Planet (4 weeks)

Children need to consider the role of communication in their lives and the technologies and strategies that help people become effective communicators. Children need the skills to interact effectively with others.

Section 1: Reading Comprehension

Section 2: Biomes of Our Earth

Section 3: This Is Our Planet Poetry

Section 4: This Is Our Planet Short Stories
