Pre-kindergarten is a Ministry of Education funded program for 3 and 4-year-old children.

A holistic approach is foundational to the Pre-kindergarten program. This means that all aspects of a child’s life are considered within the program—the family, the community and his/her language, culture, social-emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual development. Each classroom environment focuses on play and promotes hands-on learning opportunities.

Pre-kindergarten runs four days a week either mornings or afternoons (depending on the school) with some Fridays dedicated to family days, home visits and class outings. There are 16 students per class, one teacher and one educational assistant (8:1 ratio). Nutritional snacks are provided to students each day.

Families need to fill out an application for potential program placement. Due to the limited availability of pre-kindergarten programs, children and their families are selected for the program to ensure the most vulnerable children are served.

Pre-kindergarten leads to improved social skills, better health and higher self-esteem. Children in need have the opportunity to develop the social, emotional and intellectual skills that will help them succeed. Early learning establishes a foundation for future school success and is an important investment in successful child development.

Early Learning Intensive Supports (ELIS)

Thanks to the Canada-Saskatchewan Early Learning and Child Care Agreement that was signed in March 2018, we are able to offer space for preschool-aged children who require intensive support in existing pre-kindergarten programs.
