Ongoing STF work-to-rule sanctions begin Monday, June 10

Division
STF sanctions as of June 10

On Thursday, June 6, 2024, the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) notified the school division of job action starting on Monday, June 10, 2024. In a letter to the school division, the STF announced ongoing teacher work-to-rule sanctions that include:

  • Teachers are to report to school and provide professional service no more than 15 minutes prior to the start of the school day and not later than 15 minutes after the conclusion of the school day.
    • There will be no extracurricular activities.
  • Teachers will withdraw noon lunch supervision services.

If you are not registered for before-and-after-school care or take the school bus, please ensure your children do not arrive at school more than 15 minutes before school, and ensure you have made provisions for them to be out of the school no later than 15 minutes after school.

In an effort to maintain the time students are in class receiving instruction, the following changes will be made.

High Schools

  • Classes will follow the regular full-day schedules.
  • Schools will open only 15 minutes before period 1 begins and close 15 minutes after period 5 ends.
  • Schools will be closed during the lunch break.
    • Students must leave school property and grounds.
  • Special education buses and taxi schedules will not change.
    • Saskatoon Transit schedules will not change.

Elementary Schools in Saskatoon, Martensville and Warman

  • Schools will have a compressed school day:
    • Transportation and classes will begin at the regularly scheduled time.
    • Classes will end 80 minutes earlier than the normally scheduled dismissal time.
      • Schools will communicate details.
      • Buses and taxis will run at this revised time at the end of the day.
    • Students will have the opportunity to eat at their desks during class; there will not be a formal lunch break.
    • Required duty-free lunch for teachers and prep time will take place after students are dismissed and within their work-to-rule schedule.
  • Schools will open only 15 minutes before school begins and close 15 minutes after school ends.
  • Half-day pre-kindergarten programming will have a revised schedule:
    • Morning programs will operate for the first 2 hours and 15 minutes of the morning and receive busing to school.
    • Afternoon programs will operate the last 2 hours and 15 minutes of the compressed school day and receive busing home from school.
    • Specific times will be communicated by schools.
  • Before and after school programs will continue:
    • Programs will operate before school in the morning.
    • Not all programs may be able to start earlier in the afternoon. Please assume that the afternoon program will not start until the regular dismissal time. Families will need to make alternate plans if the provider is not able to start the program immediately after the revised dismissal time. The provider or school will send out revised times, if offered.

Sanctions will remain in place until further notice. We will provide updates via direct communication through Edsby and/or School Bundle messenger (emails from noreply-gscs@schoolbundle.ca, listed as Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, or text or voice messages from 1-306-400-6811), updates on our website (www.gscs.ca), and on our Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) accounts.

We respect the bargaining process and STF’s right to take job action. Our primary focus will remain offering high-quality Catholic education in a safe and secure school environment for students.

If you have specific questions about school operations, please contact your school principal.

Sincerely,
François Rivard,
Director of Education
