LYNGr - Check these facts out!

The Turn Debt into Hope campaign is a global movement led by Development and Peace — Caritas Canada, inspired by Pope Francis’ call during the Jubilee Year to take action for justice, peace, and dignity. The campaign focuses on over 100 countries in the Global South that are stuck in a cycle of crushing foreign debt. These countries are forced to spend more on debt repayments than on essentials like health care, education, and clean water. Many of these debts are unjust and unpayable, often created decades ago under unfair conditions. The campaign asks wealthier nations to cancel these debts and support a complete reform of the global financial system, so it prioritizes people’s well-being and the health of the planet over profits. As high school students, you have an important role to play—by learning about global issues, spreading awareness, and signing the petition, you become part of a global movement for justice. Your action helps raise a collective voice for fairness and equality. And here’s a powerful fact to inspire you: in the year 2000, a similar campaign led to the cancellation of over $100 billion in debt for 36 impoverished countries, proving that when people come together, real change can happen.
