Land-Based Learning

July 18, 2025

Re-connecting with the land and creation is both culturally and academically important at awâsisak kâ-nîmîhtocik – St. Francis School.

Specialized spaces in the school, such as a medicines lab (generously funded by Kathy and Keith Martell) and greenhouse (outfitted and planned in-part through in-kind gifts from Early's Farm and Garden and the University of Saskatchewan's College of Agriculture and Bioresources) will give students hands-on experiential learning.

In addition to land-based learning opportunities at the school, we have access to an outdoor classroom and programming at Eagle Creek for the study of prairie ecology and environmental issues. There is a new building on this site and soon there will be a sweat lodge that will be accessible for school sweats.

The land was bequeathed to the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation by the Scissons family in honour of their parents, Ed and May Scissons, with the understanding the property would be used to teach children about nature.
