Family Engagement Night a success

On May 28, École Father Robinson School partnered with École St. Mother Teresa School and St. Volodymyr School to host a Family Engagement Night at the Cathedral of the Holy Family that focused on learning about powwows.

Throughout the evening, families learned about the purpose and significance of powwows, including the importance of the songs, dances, regalia, and protocols that are part of these gatherings. Powwows are opportunities for Indigenous communities to celebrate culture, strengthen connections, honour traditions, and bring people together.

Students and families had the opportunity to hear teachings from Indigenous educators and community members, as well as watch dancers and singers share their gifts and talents. Seeing the dancing, hearing the drumming, and learning about the meaning behind different traditions helped bring the learning to life.

This event was part of our ongoing commitment to building understanding and respectful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. By learning together, asking questions, and experiencing culture first-hand, we continue to take important steps toward reconciliation and a stronger community.

We are very grateful to the dancers, singers, and knowledge keepers who shared their time and expertise with us. Their generosity created a meaningful learning experience for everyone who attended.
