Health & Sciences Academy at Bishop James Mahoney High School
Since welcoming its first students for the 2017-18 school year, the Health & Sciences Academy at BJM has grown into a diverse, engaging, and unprecedented academic program that provides an incredible student learning experience. At present, 224 students from grades 9-12 are enrolled in the HSA at BJM. Two years ago, the program expanded to include a French immersion stream. In 2020, our first group of HSA students graduated from the program with the advantage of four post-secondary classes completed while at BJM. This included a first year University of Saskatchewan biology class and lab, taught at BJM by an HSA university-approved instructor. We are very excited to announce that starting this year, in addition to Biology 120.3, the HSA will be offering U of S Math 110.3. HSA students will be able to take another first year university course for free (see program costs page) in a regular high school classroom, instead of in a lecture theater with 100's of students!
At a virtual meeting of HSA teachers and graduating students in the spring of 2020, those in attendance fondly recalled the incredible memories created through their HSA experiences. These included research at the Canadian Light Source, synchrotron, population studies in local natural habitats, Indigenous cultural experiences in the outdoors, microbiology lab work at the U of S, and instruction from commercial pilots on flight mechanics, to name just a few. Our hard-working, talented, and dedicated staff, willing community partners, and generous sponsors have made these experiences possible.
