Bernard of Clairvaux left his home to join a monastic community in the year 1111, at the age of 20. He lived during a tumultuous time in the church and took on many roles—adviser of popes, preacher of the Second Crusade, defender of the faith, healer of a schism, reformer of a monastic order, scripture scholar, theologian, and eloquent preacher—to help bring stability.

In June 2021, the federal government passed legislation to make September 30 a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
