KD instead of candy: Students trick-or-treat for Food Bank

When students at St. Joseph High School did their first Halloweening for Hunger food drive, current students were not even born.

Twenty years later, hundreds of students at both St. Joseph High School and Bishop James Mahoney High School led the charge collecting non-perishable food items for Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre instead of gathering candy for themselves.

In preparation for their door-to-door collection for Halloween, students delivered flyers to residents in several Saskatoon neighbourhoods to give people time to prepare and gather their donation for the food bank. If they were not home, or preferred to not answer the door for some reason, such as being preoccupied with game six of the World Series, residents could leave food outside with a note letting students know it was for the food drive.

Staff from the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre were on hand October 31 and November 3 to help load the tons of food that was collected onto trucks for delivery to the food bank.
