Junior BLAZE makes its debut

Bishop Michael Smolinski talks to Junior BLAZE participants

As a continuation of the BLAZE leadership initiative (Byzantine Leadership and Zealous Evangelization), BLAZE alumni launched the Junior BLAZE program for Grade 8 students throughout the school division at Bethlehem Catholic High School on April 18. Although participation was smaller than expected, the day was meaningful and impactful, with clear enthusiasm, engagement, and growth from both students and alumni.

The afternoon began with introductions and interactive icebreakers that encouraged teamwork and stepping outside comfort zones, followed by reflections on communication and leadership. A highlight was meeting Bishop Michael Smolinski, bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saskatoon, where students connected through conversation and a game. Two rotations of skill stations further developed leadership and teamwork through hands-on activities.

Students also experienced a time of silence and journaling, allowing for personal reflection, followed by a group lesson that reinforced key themes. The day included a meaningful session with Fr. Ivan Nahachewsky, who introduced the Jesus Prayer and how it can be practiced in everyday life.

We extend our sincere thanks to the BLAZE alumni facilitators, as well as all sponsors and supporters who made this program possible. Your support helped create a space for students to grow in confidence, faith, and community.

Though small in numbers, Junior BLAZE showed that meaningful transformation happens through connection and shared purpose. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to its success and look forward to growing this initiative in the future.
