Our school is named after St. Joseph, husband of Mary, patron of the universal church and principal patron of Canada. Approximately 300 students in Grades 9 and 10 formed the student body when St. Joseph opened in 1995, with Grade 11 and 12 programs added in subsequent years.

The school community was honoured to have composer Howard Cable write a commissioned piece, the St. Joseph March, to commemorate the school opening. The silver roof and the black and white used throughout the school's interior became the inspiration for St. Joe's uniform colours after much careful thought and reflection.

After the school opened, it was decided, with the help of the Meewasin Valley Authority and Superintendent Dick Niemen, that the schoolyard would be reclaimed as natural prairie. This remains a unique feature of the school today.

The implementation of Teacher Guardian Groups (TGGs) was another defining program at the school. Every student is assigned to a "homeroom" teacher for his or her entire high school career at St. Joseph. The TGGs, which meet daily, are designed to build closer Christian relationships between a staff member and a class of students.
